Indiana lost 3,100 jobs in December
Only three states lost more jobs

INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana lost another 3,100 jobs last month, according to data released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Only three states lost more jobs than Indiana.

"Month after month after month, the state reports anemic or negative growth, but all we hear Mitch Daniels talking about is how wonderful everything is," said Indiana Democratic Party Chair Dan Parker. "He has no idea what's going on beyond the palace walls."

The most recent job loss numbers come on the heels of the devastating news Thursday that General Electric plans to close its plant in Bloomington by the end of 2009, eliminating roughly 900 jobs. Sallie Mae also announced on Thursday that it would lay off 117 workers in its Fishers office as a result of the credit crunch.

In his "State of the State" speech on Tuesday, Daniels proclaimed that in 2007, "all records were broken for new investment and new jobs coming to our state."

Yet Daniels would not comment on the GE and Sallie Mae announcements, nor has he been willing to address the job loss numbers in months past.

According to BLS data, Indiana added fewer than 6,000 jobs between December 2006 and December 2007, the lowest year-end total since Daniels took office.

"What is it going to take to get Mitch Daniels to acknowledge that average working Hoosiers are suffering?" Parker asked. "Of course we're happy when some company promises to bring jobs here a few years down the road, but there are people out there who need help now, and all they're getting from Mitch Daniels are hollow talking points. You can't feed a family of four on talking points."
