Self-described moderate contradicts herself, sides with NRA

INDIANAPOLIS – It’s been 100 days since the House of Representatives passed the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019, a measure to strengthen the federal background check system for firearm purchases. Five Republicans co-sponsored the measure and eight crossed party lines to support it – Congresswoman Susan Brooks was not one of them.

It’s an odd maneuver considering the day a school shooting shattered a community she represents, the Carmel Republican said action should be taken to prevent firearms from falling into the wrong hands.

“Brooks represents the 5th District, which includes the city of Noblesville.

“I believe there’s a consensus that we know we need to make sure that people who should not have weapons — you know, criminals, young children, those with mental illness — we need to make sure that they do not have access to weapons.”

Indiana Democratic Party Chairman John Zody questioned Brooks’ decision.

“Congresswoman Brooks says she’s a moderate but, when the chips are down, she sides with extremists,” said Zody. “Brooks’ platitudes won’t make our schools safer, only action will.”
