In December, Holcomb acknowledged need for “urgent action” and “equation changers”

INDIANAPOLIS – Fresh off an Indianapolis Star profile labeling his first year as lacking “defining moments”, Governor Eric Holcomb finds himself at a critical crossroads. Indiana is facing real challenges: slow-growing wages, a statewide wave of opioid addiction, spiking health care premiums and a crisis at the Department of Child Services. The time for action is now and Holcomb has an opportunity to shake off critics’ claims he lacks a vision by laying out a bold reform agenda on Tuesday.

Holcomb himself has agreed on the need for policy “equation changers” to cement a legacy. Holcomb knows the time is now. In a 2017 exit interview, Holcomb noted,“I’d better not be a caretaker. The time is too short and these times call for urgent action.”

Indiana Democratic Party Chairman John Zody isn’t confident the first-term governor will meet his own expectations on Tuesday.

“Bold vision isn’t Eric Holcomb. Will that change Tuesday?” said Zody. “His stiff, standoffish approach to the crisis at DCS is a perfect example of a governor caught flat-footed and without a plan. The opioid epidemic, vulnerable children. These issues can’t wait for when it’s convenient for the governor, they demand a leader with a plan right now.”
