The Garrett Clipper: Garrett approves American Rescue Plan spending

Every single Indiana Republican voted “NO” on the American Rescue Plan – calling it “socialism”
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families, today continued to praise the impact President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan is having on the State of Indiana. This time, the state received $5.6 million to help with tourism efforts during the pandemic and towns like Garrett, Beech Grove, and Anderson approved relief funding to help with lost revenues, sewer or water projects, and other needs for municipalities. Additionally, media continue to showcase how the Rescue Plan is creating a better future for Hoosier families, including lifting nearly 80,000 children out of poverty ahead of last week’s Thanksgiving holiday.
It bears repeating: every single Republican in Indiana’s Congressional delegation – as well as Governor Eric Holcomb – said “NO” to the Rescue Plan. In fact, Indiana Republicans have called the Rescue Plan and The Jobs Act “socialism” despite campaigning on the very issues themselves. This means Republicans like Todd Young, Victoria Spartz, and Jackie Walorski all view the Rescue Plan’s investments on broadband ($250 million), childcare ($540 million), Governor Holcomb’s READI program ($500 million), and tourism ($5.6 million) as “socialism”, even as it’s creating a better future for the state.
Indiana Democrats delivered this better opportunity for Hoosier families, and the Party and its leaders plan to campaign extensively on the Rescue Plan and The Jobs Act through the 2022 state and midterm elections. Hoosiers have a brighter future on the horizon, and it’s because Democrats got this done for them.

IndyStar Column: “Congress passed relief packages under presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden that not only rescued the economy, but also left many people better off than they were before the pandemic. If the downside of all that spending is that the price of turkey is higher for Thanksgiving this year, then the upside is that more children live in households that can afford to buy it.
The American Rescue Plan, which passed in March, expanded the Child Tax Credit in a way that sent monthly checks of $250 to $300 per child to tens of millions of households. That is life-changing money for parents. It is helping families cover the costs of everything from meals to paying for daycare.
Congress’ COVID-19 relief money kept about 6 million children out of poverty in July when the Child Tax Credit checks started rolling out, according to a paper from the Center on Poverty and Social Policy at Columbia University. Without that spending, child poverty would have been more than 40% higher, the paper found.
Giving people money might not be a great policy for every circumstance, but it has lifted millions of children into more stable conditions than they might be in if the pandemic had never happened. That’s something to feel good about.

“The federal funds for the tourism grant were included in Democratic President Joe Biden’s “American Rescue Plan” that was enacted in March with the support of U.S. Rep. Frank J. Mrvan, D-Highland.
The spending was opposed by every Republican representing Indiana in Congress, including U.S. Sens. Todd Young and Mike Braun.”
