INDIANAPOLIS – Alabamians are going to the polls today to choose whether their next U.S. Senator will be a man who prosecuted the hate crimes of the KKK or an alleged pedophile who has expressed support for slavery, but one thing is clear: here in Indiana, both Congressman Messer and Congressman Rokita have indicated that they’re “comfortable” with Roy Moore.

In a Roll Call article this morning, Congressman Messer’s campaign whitewashed his record on Moore. Even though he had tried to distance himself from Moore after allegations emerged from multiple women that Moore had sexually abused them when they were teenagers, Congressman Messer’s campaign manager now erroneously claimed that his position was “the same as before… it’s up for the people of Alabama to decide.”

Congressman Messer followed Congressman Rokita’s flip-flop on Moore from Sunday. In an IN Focus interview, Congressman Rokita all but endorsed Moore in spite of the multiple pedophilia allegations. “I’d be comfortable with Roy Moore… this is a man who’s 100 percent pro-life like myself,” Congressman Rokita said, instead attacking Republicans like Senator Jeff Flake who donated to Moore’s opponent out of disgust with Moore.

Congressman Rokita has now stood by Moore at both the start and end of the Alabama general election campaign. The day after Moore’s primary win, his campaign released a memo claiming that he’d take up Moore’s mantle in the Indiana race.

In addition to the widely reported instances of Moore’s sexual abuse of teenage girls as young as 14, he has also repeatedly portrayed slavery as a positive. Moore declared during a rally this year that the last time America was “great” was when “we had slavery… our families were strong, our country had a direction.” Reports also emerged yesterday of a 2011 radio interview where Moore said that getting rid of amendments after the 10th—presumably including the anti-slavery 13th, 14th, and 15th—would “eliminate many problems” with the U.S. Government.

“Congressmen Messer’s and Rokita’s moves to support Roy Moore are somehow both morally bankrupt and politically foolish,” said Will Baskin-Gerwitz, Senior Media Strategist for the Indiana Democratic Party. “No matter how ‘comfortable’ a sliver of Indiana’s primary electorate is – or how ‘comfortable’ voters from one of the nation’s most conservative states prove themselves to be tonight – supporting an alleged pedophile and pro-slavery bigot will never be in line with Hoosier values.”
