INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Democratic Party Chairman John Zody issued the following statement as layoffs begin at Carrier Corporation’s Indianapolis facility.
“Today, 338 Hoosiers will lose their jobs. Jobs that earned $22/hour on average, above the state’s median wage. These families still have bills to pay, still have to get their kids ready for school and now face these realities without the security of a steady paycheck. This isn’t limited to today or Indianapolis. It’s playing out across our state in small towns and large cities alike. The 700 laid off workers at United Technologies’ Huntington facility deserve better. These families deserve better. They deserve empathy and they deserve action. They deserve a governor with a plan to grow the Hoosier economy and grow Hoosiers’ wages. Governor Holcomb continues to maintain a strategic low-profile on the Carrier layoffs and has offered no concrete plan to lift Hoosiers’ stagnant wages. Without a plan from the governor, it seems today’s announcement is just the first of many.”
