Fort Wayne Journal Gazette: Holcomb vetoes bill curtailing emergency power
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families, today criticized the Indiana Republican Party for invoking more partisan infighting rather than leading Indiana out of the COVID-19 pandemic and getting things done for Hoosier families. This time, Governor Eric Holcomb issued a veto on House Bill 1123, which would strip some emergency powers away from the governor. The veto is expected to be overridden by the Republcian supermajority and would continue the theme of the 2021 legislative session being about extreme partisanship coming from the INGOP rather than common sense policy solutions.
The Indiana Democratic Party is confident many Hoosiers will find the Republicans’ agenda — which includes party infighting, bullying Indiana’s cities and towns, and gutting millions of dollars from public schools — appalling because it fails to actually address the issues facing their families. This partisan agenda contrasts with the Indiana Democrats who’ve gotten to work by passing the American Rescue Plan, the Protect the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, and Indiana House Bill 1006.
Democrats are willing to bet Hoosiers will value action over political theater in the future. Here’s how the latest chapter in the INGOP civil war played out over the weekend:
IndyStar: “In a letter to Indiana House Speaker Todd Huston, Holcomb announced his decision and questioned what he called the “central part” of House Bill 1123 that would allow the General Assembly to call itself into a 40-day session during an emergency.
The Indiana Constitution, Holcomb argues, gives that power exclusively to the governor.
If lawmakers were called into the special session, they could terminate any emergency order enacted by the governor. Holcomb has required masks, closed businesses and limited their capacities during the COVID-19 pandemic through the state’s disaster emergency order.”
