INDIANAPOLIS — Today, Mike Braun and Senate Republicans blocked the passage of a bill that would have protected Americans’ access to IVF. Braun has been in the Senate for six years, and he has consistently failed to deliver legislation that Hoosiers need.
The proposed bill would have required insurance companies to cover the cost of procedures, in addition to other related treatments. This is the second time it has been voted down by the Senate. Braun voted against this measure the first time in June.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2.3% of all babies born in the country were a product of assisted reproductive methods, making it an important tool for families wanting children. By refusing to protect it, Braun and other Republicans are endangering thousands of families.
“Hoosiers need only to look at Mike Braun’s record of blocking progress and healthcare protections in the Senate to see the type of governor he would be,” said Indiana Democratic Party Chair Mike Schmuhl. “With Hoosier couples throughout our state relying on IVF to start a family and live their dreams, this should never have been a difficult vote. In fact, the bill was similar to the plan proposed by President Trump in recent weeks. Hoosiers trying to start a family deserve support and assurance that they will be protected — not just empty words.
“Jennifer McCormick is the type of leader who will fight everyday for Hoosier families to have the freedom to make their own healthcare decisions and keep the government out of our exam rooms and doctor’s offices. We must have leaders who will be there for the families struggling through fertility issues. Mike Braun has proven time and again he would only let them down as governor.”
