INDIANAPOLIS – All three GOP candidates have strongly supported dismantling our nation’s health care system and taking away health insurance from Hoosiers. Congressmen Messer and Rokita have repeatedly voted for proposals to dismantle our health care, including the American Health Care Act (AHCA), which passed in May. The AHCA would have raised premiums for the average Hoosier by $1,000 a year and allowed older Hoosiers to be charged as much as five times more than younger adults. It would have cut $800 billion from Medicaid and effectively gutted HIP 2.0 while kicking 300,000 people off of their health care.
Congressman Rokita co-sponsored AHCA, while Congressman Messer asserted that its failure was bad for the country. While in the Indiana Statehouse, Rep. Braun proposed healthcare legislation to allow the state to “get out ahead” of the repeal effort that ultimately failed.
FACTS:
- Despite President Trump calling the repeal attempt “mean” and urging a “more generous” fix, Congressman Rokita was a co-sponsor of and Congressman Messer voted for the Republican attempt to gut our nation’s health care system.
- Congressman Messer called the failure of health care repeal “a bad day for the American people,” even though its passage would have caused premiums for the average Hoosier to spike by roughly $1,000 dollars annually.
- Congressman Rokita and Messer and Rep. Braun supported the House Republican attempt to dismantle our nation’s health care system, a move that would’ve eliminated coverage for 300,000 Hoosiers and raised costs for the poor and elderly, Indiana’s most vulnerable.
- Congressmen Messer and Rokita have stood by while members of their party have sabotaged the health care markets, causing premiums in Indiana to rise by double digits.
- Rep. Braun introduced premature health care legislation that anticipated the repeal of the Affordable Care Act. Despite trying to “get out ahead” of the changes, the ACA repeal failed, and Rep. Braun’s attempts fell hopelessly aside, never making it out of the Indiana House.
