IndyStar: “A spokesperson for Indiana Senate Republicans said in an email earlier this month that the caucus was not “using Mr. Bopp’s model legislation as the basis for our bill”
NWI Times: “It’s expected many of the proposed “second reading” amendments will be filed by Republican senators seeking to eliminate all abortion exceptions, except possibly when the life of the mother is at stake.”
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families, today issued a flip-flop advisory ahead of the second reading of Senate Bill 1 in the Indiana Senate. Extremist organizations like Right to Life have demanded the Senate GOP pass its “national model” that would ban all forms of abortion except for saving the life of the mother. Should they introduce and pass this policy via amendment tomorrow, as predicted, the caucus would backtrack on its commitment to Hoosiers from just ten days ago.
The Indiana GOP have already started buckling to extremist organizations like Right to Life, and this priority to force birth on women and children is too extreme for Hoosier families.
It’s without a doubt: the Indiana Republican Party is poised to side with just 17-percent of Hoosiers who want a total abortion ban. They would rather pursue this agenda than fix the state’s F-rated quality of life or its horrendous maternal mortality rate – which ranks third-worst in the nation. There is an opportunity to create a better future for Hoosiers, but it’s become clear the Indiana GOP simply does not want to meet that challenge.
Here’s the influence extremist organizations like Right to Life are having on the Indiana GOP:

CHASER: Senate GOP set to introduce amendment identical to “national model”

LIME: This is the extremist organization’s “national model” for an abortion ban
POLITICO: “The 10-year-old Ohio girl who crossed state lines to receive an abortion in Indiana should have carried her pregnancy to term and would be required to do so under a model law written for state legislatures considering more restrictive abortion measures, according to the general counsel for the National Right to Life.
Jim Bopp, an Indiana lawyer who authored the model legislation in advance of the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade, told POLITICO on Thursday that his law only provides exceptions when the pregnant person’s life is in danger.
‘She would have had the baby, and as many women who have had babies as a result of rape, we would hope that she would understand the reason and ultimately the benefit of having the child,’ Bopp said in a phone interview on Thursday.”
