Holcomb in 2016: Gov. Pence “struck the right tone” when the governor declined to support LGBT protections

INDIANAPOLIS – Eric Holcomb tried to say twice this weekend that Hoosiers aren’t concerned about equal protections for LGBT Hoosiers. In fact, Holcomb tried to claim LGBT rights were a 2015 issue – even though he supported Mike Pence’s failure to embrace equal protections earlier this year.

Not only does Holcomb show just how tone deaf he is, but it also highlights how he is choosing to focus on Mike Pence’s failed agenda instead of the issues most important to Hoosiers for this election.

Anderson Herald-Bulletin: “Republican gubernatorial candidate Eric Holcomb says the majority of Indiana residents have put the civil rights debate for the LGBT community behind them.”

“Eric Holcomb is trying to sweep this issue under the rug and ignore the fact that more than 70% of Hoosiers are calling for equal protections for the LGBT community,” said Drew Anderson, communications director. “Hoosiers are fed up by the Pence-Holcomb Administration shoving through divisive policies like RFRA and then acting like all is well with the state. The fact is, Indiana’s economy and its reputation continues to take a hit because of RFRA and Eric Holcomb’s anti-gay agenda.”

Eric Holcomb is no friend to the LGBT community as he has a long history of supporting policies that hurt LGBT Hoosiers. As lieutenant governor, Holcomb said Gov. Pence “struck the right tone” when the governor declined to support LGBT protections during the State of the State address. As Chairman of the Indiana Republican Party, Holcomb was responsible for allowing the party to add a same-sex marriage ban to its platform. And as a candidate for state representative, Holcomb said he’d vote “no” on LGBT protections.

Eric Holcomb would only continue the status quo with Statehouse Republicans’ long history of putting anti-LGBT policies before the well-being of Hoosiers and the state of Indiana. At a time when Hoosiers want to go in a new direction – one that includes everyone in the state – Eric Holcomb would have Indiana fall short.
