Don’t Forget: Pence tried to take credit for military programs he voted against in the NDAA FY2021
Pence joins Todd Young in praising the American Rescue Plan despite voting against it
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families, today criticized U.S. Congressman Greg Pence for trying to have it both ways on President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan. This time, Pence touted the Restaurant Revitalization Fund, a program within the U.S. Small Business Association (SBA), as a way for Hoosiers in the service industry to receive some much-needed relief during the COVID-19 pandemic. The problem: the Fund is being paid for by the American Rescue Plan, the federal relief package Rep. Pence and the entire Indiana Republican Party Congressional delegation voted against.
This isn’t the first time Congressman Pence tried to pull a fast one on his constituents. In February, Pence was caught bragging about military programs funded by the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) despite having voted against the measure at the end of last year.
Hoosiers shouldn’t be surprised Indiana Republicans like Greg Pence and Todd Young are trying to have it both ways on the American Rescue Plan. Since Democrats like Congressmen André Carson and Frank Mrvan, Jr. passed this legislation, more than 91-percent of Hoosiers received a $1,400 stimulus check, Indiana and its communities received more than $5.8 billion in relief, and more than $250 million will be used to expand broadband access across the state.
Here’s how Greg Pence’s strategy is playing in the news so far:
Importantville: “Greg Pence is touting something to his constituents that he voted against: the restaurant revitalization fund is part of the American Rescue Plan.”
MSNBC: “Republican praises and promotes assistance that he voted against.”
New York Daily News: “Help is on the way *even though Pence and all his fellow Republicans in Congress voted against sending it”
Mother Jones: “Amazing—yet another GOP lawmaker who is…shilling the restaurant rescue he voted against! (h/t
@adamwren)”
News Nation Now: “You literally voted against this piece of legislation.”
