President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan and Indiana Democrats’ work on House Bill 1006 were the highlights to an otherwise hyper partisan session by the INGOP
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families, today issued the following statement to summarize the informal conclusion to the 2021 legislative session at the Indiana General Assembly. The session saw an Indiana Republican Party who abided by an agenda of extreme partisanship and little common sense. In fact, the major accomplishments by the Statehouse wouldn’t have been possible without bipartisan help from President Joe Biden and Indiana Democrats:
“Governor Eric Holcomb and the Indiana Republican Party won’t ever admit this, but if it weren’t for President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan and the hard work by the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus (IBLC), the 2021 legislative session would’ve been nothing but a list of intense partisan policies that would’ve damaged the future of Indiana in the process. The American Rescue Plan is why the state will put COVID-19 in the rearview mirror, and the IBLC’s persistent advocacy and responsible approach is why criminal justice reform, Indiana House Bill 1006, was able to reach the governor’s desk. When it’s time to get to work on behalf of our families, Hoosiers are looking for partnership, not partisanship, in their government – and Democrats are ready to answer that call every time.
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about our colleagues on the other side of the aisle, because time and again, Democrats had to hold the Indiana Republican Party accountable for pushing measures that could be described as out of touch with mainstream Indiana. The receipts include Republicans’ refusal to abide by science during the COVID-19 pandemic, shouting down Indiana’s Black elected leaders, infusing a treasure chest of funding into an unregulated school choice program, picking fights with Indiana’s educators, bullying Indiana’s cities and towns, and attacking the fundamental voting rights of every Hoosier.
It’s unfortunate to see the Indiana Republican Party abide by a level of partisan pettiness not seen in recent memory, but Hoosiers are witnessing real work getting done by Indiana Democrats and our partners at the White House, and it’s this kind of collective partnership that Hoosiers will appreciate, because it’ll set the state and its communities up for success in the future.” – Lauren Ganapini, executive director for the Indiana Democratic Party
