INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families, today issued the following statement from Chairman Mike Schmuhl celebrating The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act’s announcement to clean up Grand Calumet River in Northwest Indiana. According to a release by the Environmental Protection Agency, the river is an “area of concern” and The Jobs Act will fulfill its commitment to revitalize water infrastructure systems – like the Grand Calumet River – across Indiana: 

“President Joe Biden and Congressman Frank Mrvan made a promise to solve some of today’s biggest kitchen-table issues facing Hoosier families in Northwest Indiana – and they delivered on that very promise,” said Mike Schmuhl, Chairman of the Indiana Democratic Party. “The Jobs Act’s commitment to clean up the Grand Calumet River is an addition to the $751 million promised to revitalize water systems across the state. Hoosier families are set to drink and enjoy safer, cleaner water in Lake County thanks to the hard work accomplished by Democrats like Frank Mrvan. Indiana has a brighter economic future, and it’s because Democrats – not Republicans – got to work and showed up when it mattered most.” 

U.S. Congressman Frank J. Mrvan joined President Biden and Democrats by voting “YES” on The Jobs Act last fall. Thanks to this once-in-a-generation law, investments on Indiana’s infrastructure systems will create union jobs for workers, deliver utilities like clean water, and create a brighter future for Hoosies in all 92 counties – including Northwest Indiana. Congressman Mrvan will highlight these investments – like for the Grand Calumet River – this Saturday in Porter County as part of the Indiana Democratic Party’s “Jobs Tour”. 

In contrast, not one Indiana Republican in Congress supported The Jobs Act. Despite GOP U.S. Senator Rob Portman confirming this infrastructure law would combat inflation, Indiana Republicans like Todd Young voted “NO” – putting their culture wars and partisanship ahead of a brighter future for Hoosier families.
