INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families, today issued the following joint statement from Vice-Chair Myla Eldridge and Chairman Mike Schmuhl after a bombshell report in the Indianapolis Star exposed how the Indiana Republican Party treats women – including those in the party – as second-class citizens:
“Top leaders in the Indiana Republican Party, including Attorney General Todd Rokita, knew about the sexual assault allegations against secretary of state candidate Diego Morales and remained silent. They chose to put political power ahead of the safety and well-being of Hoosier women. This failure of leadership is appalling. Diego Morales is simply unfit to hold public office, but because he is on the ballot on November 8, Republican leaders would rather treat women like second-class citizens than hold him accountable.
This Election Day, Hoosiers have a very stark choice on who will be our next secretary of state. Democrat Destiny Wells is a long-serving veteran, attorney, and mother who would keep Indiana’s elections safe and secure. She has protected our country abroad and is stepping up to protect Indiana from dangerous extremists like Diego Morales here at home. Diego was fired twice from the very office he seeks to lead, bought himself a car with campaign funds, and has been accused more than once of sexual assault.
The choice couldn’t be clearer.
We urge all Hoosiers to vote for Destiny Wells for secretary of state on November 8.”
