INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families and workers, today celebrates the 13th anniversary of the signing of the Affordable Care Act by President Barack Obama.
Over 515,000 additional Hoosiers are covered by Medicaid expansion and over 185,000 more are insured through the ACA marketplace. The law forced insurance companies to cover Hoosiers with preexisting conditions, and allowed thousands of young people in our state the opportunity to stay on their parents’ health insurance until age 26.
“Due to the Affordable Care Act, over 700,000 additional Hoosiers have quality, affordable healthcare coverage. In addition, millions more in our state benefit from the ACA’s cost-saving provisions that have lowered premiums and brought coverage rates to an all time high,” said Mike Schmuhl, Chair of the Indiana Democratic Party. “Hoosier Democrats are united against all efforts to undermine the ACA, and Representatives Frank Mrvan and André Carson are working hard everyday to expand coverage and lower prescription drug costs even further.”
Since its passage, Indiana Republicans in Congress have voted multiple times to undermine and repeal the ACA, kick hundreds of thousands of Hoosiers off their health insurance, and force many more into paying higher premiums and out-of-pocket costs. In contrast, Democratic Representatives Frank Mrvan and André Carson have worked to strengthen the ACA at every opportunity and lower costs for working families.
