NWI Times: “The gasoline tax also is due to increase to 33 cents per gallon on July 1”
NWI Times: “Hoosier motorists will be paying a total of 74.5 cents in taxes for each gallon of gasoline they purchase in May — the highest amount in Indiana history.”
WIBC’s Rob Kendall: “Democrats in Indiana being more pro taxpayer than Republicans.”
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families, today called on Indiana Republicans at the statehouse to save Hoosiers money by pausing the impending hike on the state’s gas tax – an increase that would further burden motorists across the state. The planned increase will occur on July 1, and will add to the already burdensome tax rate on families during a global inflationary period. Indiana Democrats also join elected leaders like Mike Andrade, Rita Fleming, and Tonya Pfaff who all have renewed their call for the state to pause its existing gas tax too.
Indiana Republicans can use Technical Corrections Day on May 24 to pause the tax hike AND pause the existing gas tax on Hoosiers. This would save families hundreds at the pump during this burdensome global inflationary period.
“Global inflation has made an impact across Indiana, and Democrats see a solution to temporarily relieve some of these burdens: pausing the state’s gas tax. This common-sense idea will save families cash at the pump and allow them to make ends meet with groceries or paying necessities like utility bills. It’s a win-win for the Hoosier State,” said Lauren Ganapini, executive director of the Indiana Democratic Party. “Democrats wish Indiana Republicans would get on board and use Technical Corrections Day as a moment to show governing by ideas – and not partisanship – is possible. If they refuse, Republicans will again show they only care about a national – not a Hoosier – agenda.”
Leftover dollars from the American Rescue Plan or Indiana’s nearly $6 billion surplus could make up lost revenues expected with pausing the state’s gas tax. Further, this win-win policy would temporarily improve the Indiana GOP’s F-rated quality of life that’s been burdening families in all 92 counties. Should politicians like Governor Eric Holcomb continue their opposition to this action plan, the Indiana GOP will continue to show they have no plans for the state’s future – just partisanship.

NWI Times: Indiana gasoline taxes in May will reach highest level in state history
“Hoosier motorists will be paying a total of 74.5 cents in taxes for each gallon of gasoline they purchase in May — the highest amount in Indiana history.
The Indiana Department of Revenue announced Wednesday the state’s gasoline sales tax rate next month will be 24.1 cents per gallon, a 10% increase compared to April’s gasoline sales tax rate and 60% higher than May 2021.
Indiana is one of 16 states, including Illinois and Michigan, where gasoline purchases are subject to sales tax. The sales tax rate in Indiana is 7%.” […]
“There’s no cap on Indiana’s gasoline sales tax rate, so if wholesale gas prices continue increasing the state sales tax rate will go up in tandem.
May is just the second month it’s been over 20 cents per gallon after April’s rate was set at 21.9 cents per gallon.
Indiana also imposes a separate 32 cents per gallon gasoline tax. As recently as June 30, 2017, the state’s gasoline tax rate was just 18 cents per gallon, according to the Department of Revenue.
That year, the Republican-controlled General Assembly, led by state Rep. Ed Soliday, R-Valparaiso, and Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb hiked the gasoline tax by 10 cents per gallon, and authorized annual 1 cent inflation adjustments through 2024, to fund a massive road construction program.” […]
“The high state taxes almost certainly ensure gasoline prices in Northwest Indiana will remain at or above $4 per gallon through May unless the pre-tax price of gasoline drops well below $3 per gallon, or at least 10% less than its current level.”
