INDIANAPOLIS — New reporting this week from NOTUS shows that Sixth District US Rep. Jefferson Shreve has spent his first four months in Congress making millions of dollars in stock trades, even using his position on the House Transportation Committee to trade stock in companies over which he has oversight.
The reporting shows that Shreve had a small stock portfolio before entering Congress, with investments mostly in the self-storage company he founded. But, since being sworn in, Shreve has greatly increased his portfolio — raising questions about insider trading.
Shreve’s corruption is just the latest chapter in the ongoing cycle of corruption that is the calling card of Hoosier Republicans in recent months.
Additional reporting from Indiana Capital Chronicle shows that the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) recently listed two parcels of land for significantly less than they were purchased for just two years ago.
This is just the latest example of the Indiana GOP’s playing fast and loose with taxpayer dollars and comes just months after nearly $200,000 in taxpayer dollars were wasted on luxury vehicles for Secretary of State Diego Morales and Lt. Governor Micah Beckwith.
Indiana Democratic Party Chair Karen Tallian issued the following statement in response:
“Even moderate Republicans have told me that they are seriously embarrassed by their leaders’ blatant blunders. Why did the IEDC purchase all this land just to turn around and sell it at a loss? Why has Rep. Shreve taken advantage of his seat in Congress to line his own pockets? And why should taxpayers foot the bill for nearly $200K in luxury vehicles for Lt. Gov Micah Beckwith and Secretary of State Diego Morales? Do Indiana Republicans really think Hoosiers are too stupid to see what they are doing right in front of us?
“The Indiana Republican Party has totally lost touch with the average Hoosier, leaving our state to deal with their reckless incompetence at best, or outright corruption at worst. Two decades of Republican rule hasn’t done our state any favors and Hoosiers are ready for change.”
