INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families, today issued the following statement by Myla Eldridge – Vice Chair of the Indiana Democratic Party – to celebrate Black History Month and commemorate the work of the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus in bringing total equity for all Hoosiers: 

“Today marks the start of Black History Month, an annual tradition that celebrates the contributions and successes of Black Americans. In my case, I take a moment to recognize the impact being a Black American has had on my life and so many in Indiana. I have had the honor to serve as the first Black person to hold the office of Marion County Clerk, and I’ve seen that the right to vote is one of the most precious and valuable rights in our American democracy. 

Black Americans advocated and fought for decades to be given the opportunity to cast their ballot in our nation’s free and fair election process. And as of today, this American right is being diminished in state legislatures across the nation, including right here in Indiana. House Bill 1116 would restrict voting rights in our state, and I urge all Hoosiers to do their part to call out this unjust and un-American culture war. It’s our patriotic duty to step up and protect the voices of those who so often are left behind. 

It’s encouraging to see the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus (IBLC) take action during the 2022 legislative session in the Indiana General Assembly to make Indiana a more equitable state for everyone. By introducing a new ‘economic empowerment’ agenda that includes securing affordable childcare services and higher education programs, the IBLC is continuing the process of creating a welcoming place for all Hoosiers – and not just a select few. 

Like the rest of the Indiana Democratic Party, the IBLC is looking to solve today’s kitchen table issues facing voters while also creating a better future for all Hoosier families. The Indiana Democratic Party hopes the rest of the Indiana General Assembly joins the IBLC in passing this important legislation so that all Hoosier families – especially Indiana’s Black and Brown communities – can thrive.”
