The Indiana Democratic Party released the following statement today after Governor Eric Holcomb made clear his intention not to run for the U.S. Senate in 2024:
“Governor Holcomb is the most powerful state executive in Indiana and he won 89 out of Indiana’s 92 counties just a few years ago in his reelection campaign. In normal times, he would easily beat a wacky congressman like Jim Banks in a primary. But these are not normal times. The governor’s decision not to run for the U.S. Senate next year shows that today’s Indiana Republican Party is too narrow-minded and too extreme for any sort of debate,” said Indiana Democratic Party Chairman Mike Schmuhl.
“The governor’s decision leaves the path wide open once again for Banks to be the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate. Unlike Governor Holcomb, Banks has never shown a willingness to work across the aisle and find solutions for Hoosier workers or families. Banks called the overturn of Roe v. Wade a ‘joyful day’, encouraged our country to default on its debts and obligations, called climate change ‘propaganda’, opposes same-sex marriage, and wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act, ending health insurance coverage for thousands of Hoosiers.
“Our elected officials should represent us – not themselves or special interests. Hoosiers deserve more normalcy and balance in their elected officials — at every level — and we encourage voters to join our side to put in place common sense policies and solutions for everyone who calls our state home.”
