INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families, today issued the following statement from Chairman Mike Schmuhl after the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed the Affordable Care Act will remain law, despite a decades-long attempt by the Indiana Republican Party – including elected officials like Eric Holcomb, Todd Young, Todd Rokita – to strip healthcare access from millions of Hoosiers across Indiana:
“For over a decade, Eric Holcomb, Todd Rokita, Todd Young, and the entire Indiana Republican Party built a manufactured crusade with the sole purpose of preventing millions of Hoosiers from receiving quality and affordable healthcare coverage. Many of the elected Republicans in office today — like U.S. Senator Todd Young — used the Affordable Care Act as a scare tactic in and out of election years. Luckily, this crusade ends today as the conservative-majority U.S. Supreme Court reaffirmed once again that the Affordable Care Act will be a law for generations to come.
The Affordable Care Act could not have been possible without Democratic leaders like former U.S. Congressmen Baron Hill and Brad Ellsworth putting their country and the idea of creating a better, more equitable healthcare system ahead of campaign success. And the Affordable Care Act wouldn’t have survived if former U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly hadn’t voted to save the law back in 2017 – where one vote could have repealed the ACA and funding for Indiana’s Healthy Indiana Plan 2.0 forever. The Indiana Democratic Party thanks them for their courage and willingness to sacrifice their time in elected office for the opportunity to provide a better future for Hoosier families across Indiana.
The Indiana Democratic Party’s mission is to create better opportunities for the state and Hoosiers who love to call Indiana home. Passing the Affordable Care Act and its provisions like protections for pre-existing conditions, keeping young people insured with families until the age of 26, and funding Indiana’s HIP 2.0 program is exactly why Democrats will time and again go to bat for Hoosier families and the opportunity to make Indiana the place where anyone – regardless of Zip code or health status – has a chance to succeed.” – Mike Schmuhl, Chairman of the Indiana Democratic Party
