INDIANAPOLIS — Following a 6-3 ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States ending affirmative action in college and university admissions today, the Indiana Democratic Party released the following statement from IDP Executive Director ZeNai Brooks:
“Access to higher education is crucial in the preparation for and access to better job opportunities. Today’s decision by the Supreme Court, overturning years of precedent to provide equal access to higher education for all, endangers the progress we have made over past decades, especially and specifically when it comes to black and brown communities.
We cannot go back to the days where systemic racism stymied the ability for millions of Americans to get a higher education. Let’s not ignore the underlying intent of this Supreme Court decision to uphold systems of oppression, ignoring the current reality of racial disparities that continue to plague our communities. We must remain diligent, strengthening our resolve to break down the barriers that stand in the way of black and brown communities receiving equal access to higher education. Hoosier Democrats will keep fighting so that all students who want to pursue a life-changing education will have the resources and the ability to do so, no matter their race or background.”
