INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families, today issued the following statement by Chairman John Zody in response to the vote by the U.S. House of Representatives to impeach President Donald Trump for a second time, a first in U.S. history. The second impeachment comes after the President incited an insurrection against the United States of America.
“Last week’s domestic terrorist attack on the U.S. Capitol angered and saddened many Hoosiers, including me. It’s why swift and forceful accountability is needed from our elected leaders. No person is above American law, not even the President of the United States, and I’m happy the U.S. House formally impeached Donald Trump for a second time. Democracy will never be compromised at the hands of one dishonest President intent on tearing down our values.
However, it’s disturbing to see so many members within the Indiana Republican Party still throw their allegiance toward a President who incites violence and endorses fringe politics that are simply un-American. Further, it’s quite hypocritical of the Republican Party to stand by a dangerous President when they were so willing to expel a President over a sex scandal twenty-two years ago.
Let me make this last point very clear: Hoosier Republicans who stood by Donald Trump to the end will forever be known as Americans who decided that political power was more important than protecting our nation’s democracy and abiding by their constitutional duties. They are going to bring shame on themselves for the rest of their careers — and deservedly so.”
