New Albany News and Tribune: Fleming calls on governor to suspend gas tax
Indiana GOP scheduled to raise state’s gas tax on July
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families, today called out Indiana Republicans for failing to ease the burden of high gas prices for Hoosier families. During the 2022 legislative session, Indiana Democrats proposed suspending the state’s gas tax which would save Hoosiers about $126 a month at the pump – but the Indiana GOP refused. Leftover dollars from the American Rescue Plan or Indiana’s $5 billion dollar surplus could cover lost revenues, but Republicans made clear they preferred governing by partisanship and not creating a brighter future for Hoosiers.
In fact, Governor Holcomb and Republican state lawmakers will allow an increase in the gas tax to go into effect this July.
The inaction by the Indiana Republican Party is just another reminder that they have no plan to address higher costs burdening families, just partisanship.
In contrast, Indiana Democrats like State Representatives Mike Andrade, Maureen Bauer, Rita Fleming, Earl Harris, Carolyn Jackson, and Tonya Pfaff have renewed their call for the suspension of the state’s gas tax. This plan would ease the burden of global inflation and solve this kitchen table issue important to voters at just the right time. Further, it would temporarily fix the Indiana GOP’s F-rated quality of life that’s been burdening families in all 92 counties.
