Howey Politics Indiana: “In my four decades of watching Statehouse power, I cannot remember a challenge to a sitting governor in the manner Rokita has this past week.”
INGOP Strategist Mike Murphy: “None of this has anything to do with legal principle or the Constitution. Frankly, it has to do with ambition…”
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families, today criticized Governor Eric Holcomb, Attorney General Todd Rokita, and the Indiana Republican Party for continuing with their public infighting at the expense of Hoosier taxpayers and the future of the state. On Friday, Rokita attempted to block a lawsuit filed by Holcomb that questioned the constitutionality of recently passed House Bill 1123, legislation that would curb the governor’s emergency powers during a crisis. HB1123 was forced through the Indiana General Assembly by the Republican supermajority with an extremely partisan agenda that serves no one — except themselves.
While Indiana Republicans continue to embarrass the state with their political games, Hoosier Democrats continue to get things done on behalf of families across Indiana. This includes Congressmen André Carson and Frank Mrvan, Jr. working with President Biden to pass the American Rescue Plan (ARP). Under the Rescue Plan, 91-percent of Hoosiers received a $1,400 stimulus check, Indiana’s schools received $2 billion in relief, and more than $5.8 billion were provided to the state and its cities so that the Hoosier State can put COVID-19 in the rearview mirror.
Here’s the what Hoosiers read over the weekend about the INGOP civil war:
Howey Politics Indiana: “In my four decades of watching Statehouse power, I cannot remember a challenge to a sitting governor in the manner Rokita has this past week.”
INGOP Strategist Mike Murphy: “None of this has anything to do with legal principle or the Constitution. Frankly, it has to do with ambition. The Governor is a lame-duck governor, and the legislators and the attorney general fear their county chairmen more than they fear the governor.”
NWI Times: Indiana attorney general asks court to toss governor’s lawsuit against General Assembly
“Attorney General Todd Rokita is urging a Marion County judge to throw out the lawsuit filed Tuesday by Gov. Eric Holcomb that seeks to have a new Indiana law authorizing the General Assembly to convene during statewide emergencies without the governor’s consent declared unconstitutional.
Rokita, a Republican originally from Munster, said in court documents Friday only the attorney general is empowered to file lawsuits on behalf of state officials, and he did not consent to Holcomb’s lawsuit against the General Assembly or the governor’s use of outside counsel to file it.” […]
“Moreover, Rokita said the Indiana Constitution protects members of the General Assembly from civil lawsuits while the Legislature is in session and requires any case against a state lawmaker be postponed at least 30 days beyond the Legislature’s final adjournment for the year.”
