Braun continues series of actions where the junior senator shows disrespect to Indiana’s elected offices
ICYMI: “U.S. Sen. Mike Braun said he was glad he wasn’t in Gov. Eric Holcomb’s position when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the state”
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families, today called on the Indiana press corps to ask U.S. Senator Mike Braun why he chose to abandon his elected duties and skip out on a vote to establish a bipartisan commission about the January 6 insurrection on the U.S. Capitol. Braun’s statement from last Friday does not carry any water considering the senator himself didn’t have the courage to vote either way on a committee that would’ve solved linger questions surrounding the worst domestic terrorist attack on the United States since September 11, 2001.
“The January 6 insurrection was the worst domestic terrorist attack on the United States since September 11, and it is up to lawmakers to protect our country’s national security by getting to the bottom of it so it doesn’t happen again,” said Lauren Ganapini, executive director of the Indiana Democratic Party. “Mike Braun’s choice to skip out on his elected duties is the greatest disrespect to the office and our nation, and what’s worse, it further depicts an Indiana Republican Party that has lost its identity to do the right thing by protecting our American democracy and values above hollow, partisan politics.”
Sadly, last Friday’s non-vote by Senator Braun continues a string of examples showing how the current junior senator does not respect or value Indiana’s elected offices. Not only did he refuse to vote on this bipartisan commission, but Braun also was a leading voice in the effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election results on January 6 – that is, until the insurrection itself occurred at his actual workplace. Further, Braun joked about how happy he was to not be Indiana’s governor during the COVID-19 pandemic – bragging about how he could “just talk” about the pandemic that has killed over 13,700 Hoosiers.
This is what the Indiana Republican Party has become since the former president has brainwashed the organization. Republicans are experiencing an identity crisis where they’ve dropped their longstanding values of “local control” and “small government” in favor of pushing an extreme partisan agenda that questions science, facts, and common sense. This includes Indiana Republicans’ crusade against student and faculty safety on college campuses, stripping Indiana’s governor from emergency powers during periods of crisis, and voting against President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan – which delivered more than $5.8 billion to Indiana and its communities, more than $2 billion to Indiana’s schools, and $250 million in broadband internet expansion across the state. Indiana Democrats are delivering on these common-sense solutions for Hoosier families while Republicans seem to only care about who can be more extreme — or more loyal — to an ex-president.
