INDIANAPOLIS — 88 years ago today on Aug. 14, 1935, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed into law one of the most popular and enduring programs of the New Deal. It has proven to be incredibly beneficial to Americans, with approximately 67 million individuals a month receiving benefits from the Social Security Administration (SSA) in 2023. 

Despite its immense success and life-changing effects, extreme MAGA Republicans are continuing their longstanding crusade of trying to cut Social Security and Medicare. These cuts will rip away the security and peace of mind that seniors earned through hard work.

“The targeting of one of the country’s most vulnerable populations — the elderly — should never be in our political discourse,” said Indiana Democratic Party Chair Mike Schmuhl.

“The question of Social Security solvency has been prominent for some time now, and while Democrats have continuously provided solutions — President Biden’s proposition on increasing taxes paid by the ultra-wealthy, for example — Republicans refuse to compromise. My question to them: “How long are you willing to sacrifice the future of elderly Americans for the sake of protecting the wealthy?”

Alternatively, members of the Republican Study Committee, including some of the most vulnerable House members, have proposed raising the retirement age for Social Security and privatizing Medicare. 

To say “no” to dangerous Republican agendas like this one, we urge you to vote in next year’s election, so that we may continue wishing Social Security a very happy birthday for generations to come.
