INGOP: “Defunding the police is so unpopular that Democrats are now saying Republicans started it! Pelosi, Schumer, the Squad, and even Biden have all supported defunding the police. Where are the national media ‘fact checkers’ for this blatant lie?”
Washington Post Fact Check: “Republicans keep trying to tag Biden with being part of the defund police movement. But that’s simply false.”
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families, today abided by the wishes of the Indiana Republican Party by bumping up this fact check published by The Washington Post this week about the Republicans’ claims that President Joe Biden plans to defund the police. Their ruling: four pinocchios. As the fact check correctly points out, the Indiana Republican Party can “keep trying to tag Biden” and Indiana Democrats as main players in the moment to defund the police, but it’s a “flimsy” strategy that’s “simply false”.
Democrats have consistently called out Indiana Republicans for voting against the $350 billion effort to recruit new law enforcement officers and fight crime across the nation, including for Indiana. This vote was a part of President Biden’s American Rescue Plan, which also delivered bonuses to police officers and first responders in Noblesville. Every single Republican in Indiana’s Congressional delegation – including Noblesville-based Victoria Spartz – voted “no” on the legislation, and in turn, they voted to defund the police. This very fact is why Republicans revealed their vulnerability with this reaction:
“Your Hoosier Republican leaders will always stand by our brave law enforcement officers. The Democrat party’s shameless attempt to blame Republicans for defunding the police only shows how desperate they are for wins.” – Kyle Hupfer, Chairman of the Indiana Republican Party
“Defunding the police is so unpopular that Democrats are now saying Republicans started it! Pelosi, Schumer, the Squad, and even Biden have all supported defunding the police. Where are the national media ‘fact checkers’ for this blatant lie?” – Indiana Republican Party
The Indiana Democratic Party would show you a long list of Indiana Republicans’ lies about the Democrats’ record on law enforcement, but we’ll let the Post’s ruling on the matter do the talking:
The Washington Post: “The Pinocchio Test
Republicans keep trying to tag Biden with being part of the defund police movement. But that’s simply false. The flimsiness of the charge is demonstrated by the paucity of the evidence that lawmakers muster when making their hyperbolic claims.
The reality is this: Biden wants to boost federal funding to allow for the hiring of more police officers. He said that during the campaign and then fulfilled that pledge in his initial budget proposal. The president sets the policies in his administration — and he’s been entirely consistent.
Cruz and Banks earn Four Pinocchios.”
