INDIANAPOLIS – Rep. Braun has a lot of explaining to do after repeatedly lying to Hoosiers at last night’s Senate debate, but none of those lies was more egregious than when he tried to claim he didn’t support a lawsuit expressly intended to strip protections for Hoosiers with pre-existing conditions after months of vocally supporting it.

At last night’s final Senate debate, Rep. Braun lied right to Hoosiers’ faces, trying to claim that he doesn’t support the ongoing lawsuit spearheaded by the Department of Justice that aims to dismantle coverage protections for Hoosiers with pre-existing conditions. The lie was a standout moment from last night’s debate, as he’s been on record supporting that lawsuit for months,
telling POLITICO just that in August. Rep. Braun also had the opportunity to denounce the lawsuit during the first debate and passed.

Rep. Braun’s blatant lie about his stance on pre-existing condition protections was new, but it wasn’t a shocking development; he’s been voicing phony support for protecting those with pre-existing conditions for months while failing to denounce the GOP’s repeated attempts to dismantle those protections. Rep. Braun has backed every major effort by Republicans, including the ongoing lawsuit and last year’s House and Senate bills, which would have stripped protections away from Hoosiers with pre-existing conditions.

“In what’s his most brazen lie yet, Rep. Braun tried to backtrack on his support for the lawsuit that aims to gut protections for Hoosiers with pre-existing conditions, but Hoosiers aren’t fooled when he says he doesn’t support the DOJ’s lawsuit. They know he’ll jump at every opportunity to sabotage Hoosiers’ health care,” said Michael Feldman, spokesman for the Indiana Democratic Party. “Hoosiers worried about their health care don’t trust Rep. Braun, and his comments last night just give more credence to the fact that if elected he’d do everything he could to strip away protections for pre-existing conditions.”
