INDIANAPOLIS – Rep. Braun tried to claim on national television this week that he didn’t know where the criticism of his company’s health care plan was coming from, lying once again about the sky-high deductibles that he lists on his company’s benefits guide.
Rep. Braun went on Fox News Tuesday evening, where host Bret Baier asked him to explain several of the many lies he told at last week’s debate. At one point, Rep. Braun was shown the details of his company’s health care plan, with its $5,000 and $10,000 deductibles, only to claim that he “didn’t know where they got that” and that he doesn’t know “what the foundation of it is.” The “foundation” of those details are his company’s deductibles, which were prominently featured his company’s benefits guide. Details of the plan have often been reported on by Politico and CNN, as well as here in Indiana on WRTV.
It would seem likely that Rep. Braun was playing dumb on his company’s health care plan because he knows that despite claiming that it could be a nationwide model, it’s been a disaster for his employees. Independent fact-checkers have confirmed that Rep. Braun’s employees who get sick or have chronic health issues will have to pay as much as $10,000 out of pocket before their insurance kicks in. For some of his lower-level employees, who earn $25,000 or less annually before taxes, that’s nearly half their salary. Former employees of Rep. Braun’s have spoken out to denounce the company’s “horrendous” health insurance.
“If Rep. Braun needs a brush up on the details of his company’s awful insurance plan and its sky-high deductibles, there’s a few of his former employees who are happy to remind him just how ‘horrendous’ it really is,” said Michael Feldman, spokesman for the Indiana Democratic Party. “Rep. Braun lies about how much he knows about the details of his company’s health care plan, but the truth is simple: its sky-high deductibles and lack of coverage for pre-existing conditions are simply unaffordable for Hoosier families.”
