Lawsuit that started this week, brought by AG Hill, DOJ, and nearly 20 other Republican AGs, would end protections for more than 1.1 million Hoosiers under 65 with pre-existing conditions
INDIANAPOLIS – Rep. Braun has yet to explain how why he supports Attorney General Curtis Hill’s politically-motivated lawsuit aimed at stripping protections from the 1.1 million Hoosiers under the age of 65 with a pre-existing condition while still believing that AG Hill must resign.
Hearings before a federal judge in Texas began this week for the lawsuit brought by Attorney General Curtis Hill and nearly twenty other Republican attorneys general, as well as the Department of Justice, that attacks the nation’s health care system. If the case is decided in the favor of Hill and the DOJ, nearly 1.1 million Hoosiers with pre-existing conditions will lose their coverage protections, and insurance companies will once again be allowed to discriminate against Hoosiers with health issues like asthma and diabetes. Rep. Braun has vocally backed Hill’s lawsuit, just like he’s backed every major GOP effort over the past year to strip away these protections.
Rep. Braun’s support for the Hill’s lawsuit, however, is complicated by his repeated calls for Hill to resign. Rep. Braun was one of the last GOP leaders in Indiana to call on Hill to resign in the wake of the allegations that he groped multiple women, including Republican Statehouse staffers and an elected official at an Indianapolis bar in March.
Yet despite ultimately calling for Hill’s resignation, Rep. Braun now stands behind a lawsuit that will harm over one million Hoosiers to help potentially achieve a long-held partisan goal, and hand Hill a significant political victory. He has yet to explain why he’s supporting a lawsuit brought in part by a man he’s called on to resign.
“Rep. Braun’s hypocrisy on pre-existing conditions knows no bounds – he’ll even call for Attorney General Hill to resign with one hand while supporting his disastrous lawsuit with the other,” said Michael Feldman, spokesman for the Indiana Democratic Party. “Hoosiers can’t trust Rep. Braun to tell them the truth about where he stands, but after watching him dutifully support the lawsuit of a man he’s called on to step down in a groping scandal, it’s clear just how desperate he is to destroy the health care of 1.1 million Hoosiers.”
