INDIANAPOLIS — Yesterday, testimony and video obtained by The Statehouse File showed Rep. Jim Lucas flashing a gun at Hoosier students, seemingly intimidating the group which was there and making at least one “feel threatened”.
The event underscores the efforts of the Republican supermajority on behalf of the gun lobby this session. Proposals are moving to allow more Statehouse employees to carry firearms, and end a longstanding lawsuit between the gun industry and the City of Gary to protect a firearms manufacturer from litigation.
“Indiana Republicans seemingly have enough time to belittle and intimidate high school students in between passing laws defunding the police, expanding child labor, and helping the gun lobby get off in court,” said Indiana Democratic Party Chair Mike Schmuhl. “This supermajority puts the interests of the gun lobby over those of our local governments, and even the safety of Hoosier students. It’s wrong, and it’s time to check their power at the ballot box in November.
“Indiana Republicans say laws can’t stop gun violence. They have no plan to stop gun violence because they do not believe it is possible. We all deserve an Indiana where students – and everyone in our communities – feel safe and gun-owning Hoosiers can do so safely and responsibly.”
This is not the first session that high school students have come to Statehouse in advocacy against gun violence. Democrats will continue to support their efforts for proposals that protect students and minors in the classroom.
