INDIANAPOLIS — Earlier today, Indiana Republicans passed a bill through the Indiana House that continues their years-long assault on Hoosier wetlands. House Bill 1383 redefines wetlands so that less land is protected and developers can more easily buy and build on the land by moving some wetlands out of class 3 protected status.
The legislation is a direct assault on environmental conservation efforts and may have devastating effects on the plants and animals that inhabit wetlands. The bill eliminates long standing rulemaking requirements that were put in place to protect wetland ecosystems. Dropping these requirements will allow developers to haphazardly swoop in without any regard for the environment, including flood risks from extreme storms. Experts warn that the loss of wetlands will endanger property and drinking water.
“Republicans are putting private interests over our state’s wetlands. Changing statutory language won’t change the fact that these wetlands are a central part of the Hoosier environment. Making up new definitions to satisfy out-of-state developers is a cruel and opportunistic way to allow for environmental destruction,” said Indiana Democratic Party Chair Mike Schmuhl. “These protected lands are part of Indiana’s natural beauty, and they should be around for future generations of Hoosiers. They protect our properties from extreme weather and our drinking water from contamination. Protecting wetlands is an investment in our future. We owe it to every Hoosier to protect the land around us and treat it with the respect it deserves.”
“Now more than ever, Indiana Democrats are committed to protecting our environment. While Republicans look to destroy wetlands, Democrats look to build resilient communities. Republicans should join Indiana Democrats in our efforts to care for and conserve our state, protect our drinking water, prepare for extreme weather, and ensure Hoosier children and grandchildren will inherit a beautiful state and planet.”
