Amidst (Even More) Trump Sexual Assault Allegations, McCain Rejected Trump While Young Stands By His Side

INDIANAPOLIS – Sen. John McCain will campaign today for Congressman Todd Young, who has doubled down on his support for Donald Trump in the aftermath of multiple sexual assault allegations against the presidential nominee.

The joint appearance comes just seven days after Sen. McCain withdrew his support of Trump and forcefully denounced him, saying that “Donald Trump’s behavior … concluding with the disclosure of his demeaning comments about women and his boasts about sexual assaults, make it impossible to continue to offer even conditional support for his candidacy.”

During that same timespan, Todd Young repeatedly dodged questions about his support for Trump, claiming he was giving the issue “serious consideration.” But after days of “serious consideration” and hiding from Indiana press, Congressman Young told the Washington Post he continues to support Trump even after he bragged about sexual assault, and after a year of Trump disparaging veterans, Gold Star families, women, and even a Hoosier judge.

What makes today’s joint appearance even more awkward is that Congressman Young continues to back Donald Trump even though he attacked Sen. McCain’s service to our nation, and has spent the past week criticizing McCain for withdrawing his support.

“While many other Republicans, including Sen. McCain, disavowed their support for Donald Trump, Congressman Young made a political calculation and chose to keep supporting a man who bragged about sexual assault and even attacked Sen. McCain’s service to our nation,” said Brooke Bainum, press secretary. “Now, he has been silent as further allegations and evidence point to a history of sexual misconduct by his party’s nominee. Todd Young’s continued refusal to stand up to Donald Trump goes against both his better judgement and Hoosier values, and he deserves to tell both Sen. McCain and Hoosier voters why he is willing to put his party before his country.”
