The Indiana Democratic Party requests that Senator Young read the Affordable Care Act (2010) and the House Enrolled Act 1001 (2019) – both of which provide pre-existing conditions protections for Hoosiers
Don’t forget: Todd Young voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act and its pre-existing conditions protections
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families, today was left bewildered after U.S. Senator Todd Young announced plans to reintroduce a measure to protect Hoosiers from being denied health insurance due to having a pre-existing condition. While Democrats are certainly appreciative of Young’s effort, we recommend the Senator read the Affordable Care Act from 2010 and the House Enrolled Act 1001 from the Indiana General Assembly in 2019 — both of which already provide pre-existing conditions protections for Hoosiers.
Todd Young’s press release is nothing but a partisan stunt to hide from his many, many votes to repeal the Affordable Care Act and the pre-existing conditions provision. This grandstanding is why Hoosiers are losing trust in him.
That said, Senator Young’s blunder once again highlights his unwillingness to get serious about improving the lives of Hoosier families. The Senator this week announced his opposition for raising the minimum after meeting with a state Republican politician who is inherently against the policy as well. What’s interesting: it appears Todd Young didn’t meet with any of the 892,000 Hoosiers working a minimum wage before making his decision on the issue.
Here’s a how bad this health care stunt looks for Todd Young:
2010: The Affordable Care Act is signed into law, pre-existing conditions protections are in place.
2011-2016: As U.S. Congressman, Todd Young voted very often to repeal the Affordable Care Act and pre-existing conditions protections within the law.
2017: Newly-elected U.S. Senator Todd Young votes to repeal the Affordable Care Act..
2018: The 2018 midterm elections happen across the United States, and Democrats pull off historic wins to recapture the U.S. House of Representatives. Their winning strategy: Running on the Affordable Care Act and protecting people with pre-existing conditions.
April 10, 2019: Todd Young cosponsors the GOP’s “Protect Act”, a historic self-own following years of opposition to the Affordable Care Act.
April 24, 2019: Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb signs House Enrolled Act of 2019, which installs pre-existing conditions protections for Hoosiers.
