Todd Young, 2022: “the American people should be able to decide”

ICYMI: Only about 17-percent of Hoosiers favor banning all forms of abortion
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families, today asked U.S. Senator Todd Young to clarify his opposition to abortion. The ask comes two days after a draft opinion by the U.S. Supreme Court was leaked to the press showing the nation’s highest court fully overturning the historic Roe v. Wade ruling which constitutionally guaranteed women access to safe and legal abortions nearly 50 years ago. It’s time Young shares his plan on how far he wants to restrict abortion access for Hoosier women.
So far, it appears Todd Young wants to have it both ways (again). Young tweeted yesterday this issue should be left up to voters. But in a 2016 questionnaire, Young told Indiana’s Right to Live that he unequivocally supports criminalizing all forms of abortion – including in cases of rape, incest, and life of the mother.
Should rape survivors be forced to carry their rapist’s baby to term?
Should women who experience incest be expected to carry the baby to term?
Should a woman be forced to give birth knowing it could kill her?
The Indiana Democratic Party wants to be very clear: ending Roe v. Wade does not end abortions. It ends access to safe and legal abortions – especially for vulnerable communities nationwide. Democrats know that healthcare decisions should be made in consultation with a doctor or health care professional – not a politician, and it’s why leaders like Congressman Frank Mrvan, Hammond Mayor Tom McDermott, Destiny Wells, and others will crisscross the state to share with Hoosiers about why it’s time to protect women, families, and healthcare across Indiana.
Young has tried to have his cake and eat it too on nearly every issue since the start of the Biden Administration. He once described Donald Trump supporters as having “anger and resentment” before voting to acquit the former president for inciting an insurrection. Young flip-flopped on the The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (The Jobs Act), and then instructed his staff to tout the law privately with stakeholders. The Senator also introduced legislation on childcare and clean water after voting “NO” on a $540 million investment to the state’s childcare system and $751 million investment for clean water – via The Jobs Act and American Rescue Plan.
Indiana Republicans show time and time again they have no plans for Indiana – just dangerous partisanship.
