INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families, today passed along the following backgrounder on crime for the 2022 elections. Here’s what the media need to know: Indiana Democrats supported law enforcement when it mattered most. Meanwhile, the Indiana Republican Party voted to defund law enforcement.
Indiana Republicans have consistently claimed Democrats do not support first responders, including police. However, contrary to these claims, Democrats are actually “super-funding” law enforcement in Indianapolis. Democrats delivered these investments with President Biden’s American Rescue Plan, which also delivered bonuses to police officers in Noblesville and life-saving equipment in Terre Haute.
Despite their culture war rhetoric, every single Republican in Indiana’s Congressional delegation – including U.S. Senator Todd Young – voted “NO” on funding law enforcement. Local Republicans – like the Westfield City Council – cut funding for first responders in their annual budgets. And even U.S. Senator Mike Braun called for Republicans to defund the U.S. Military ahead of last year’s vote on the National Defense Authorization Act.
When the Indiana GOP claim Democrats do not support law enforcement, it’s a culture war that’s not rooted with the facts.

The reality is this: Biden wants to boost federal funding to allow for the hiring of more police officers. He said that during the campaign and then fulfilled that pledge in his initial budget proposal. The president sets the policies in his administration — and he’s been entirely consistent.
