The Respect for Marriage Act would codify marriage rights for interracial and LGBTQ couples across the nation 

Not one Republican in Indiana’s House delegation voted in favor of the policy

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families, today called on Todd Young and Jennifer-Ruth Green to announce their position on The Respect for Marriage Act during the Indiana GOP’s “diversity series” event at noon (details below). The U.S. House voted this week to codify marriage equality for LGBTQ and interracial couples following an opinion by the U.S. Supreme Court that stated past decisions like Obergefell v. Hodges was wrongly decided by the Court. More than 70-percent of Americans support marriage equality, and The Respect for Marriage Act would enshrine marriage rights for more than 272,000 Hoosiers. 

Not one Republican in Indiana’s House delegation voted in favor of The Respect for Marriage Act. The vote followed Mike Braun claiming last March the U.S. Supreme Court was wrong to legalize interracial marriage nationwide. 

“Marriage rights are on the line for interracial and LGBTQ couples following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe, and it’s essential for politicians like Todd Young and Jennifer-Ruth Green to express their position on this fundamental right for thousands of Hoosiers,” said Drew Anderson, spokesman for the Indiana Democratic Party. “The Indiana Republican Party continues to show they are extremists who want to throw Indiana back to the 1950s, and it’s past time the Hoosier State upgrades to a 21st Century America and corrects the F-rated quality of life ranking created by state Republicans.”
