INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Democratic Party Chairman John Zody issued the following statement after receiving reports of misinformation regarding the Bureau of Motor Vehicles’ operating hours on Election Day.
“Earlier this afternoon, I was notified by a county election board member that they had received guidance that BMV branch locations would be closed on Tuesday, November 6 for Election Day. The election board member said this information was given to them following a phone call made to the BMV hotline and that this misinformation had been disseminated by a County Clerk at a recent poll worker training, as well. Until this afternoon, the BMV website indicated branches would be closed on Tuesday, November 6. No further clarification is given. State law requires branches to be open on Election Day for the “sole purpose” of issuing forms of identification necessary in order to vote. Branches are, in fact, open on Monday and Tuesday next week.”
“It is critical that Indiana voters have the best and most accurate information about how and where to vote. It undermines the confidence in that system if state government cannot clearly communicate this information to voters. I am calling on Governor Holcomb, Secretary of State Connie Lawson and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles to address this issue immediately and ensure all state government websites, personnel and office locations have accurate information for voters.”
