INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Democratic Party Chairman John Zody issued the following statement after the House and Senate concluded the 2018 legislative session a few minutes past midnight Thursday.
“The gavel fell this morning on what can only be described as a do-nothing session. Without a defined vision for the future, Governor Holcomb’s efforts this session looked rudderless. If this legislative session had never happened, would Hoosiers have noticed? If you measure success by action on pocketbook issues, Governor Holcomb and Statehouse Republicans never even showed up. There’s not a day to waste, but GOP indifference is quietly digging the economic hole deeper for Hoosier working families. This economy is leaving Hoosier workers behind. The cost of living is rising and incomes aren’t keeping up. Indiana’s quality of life is third worst in the nation. The Department of Child Services is mired in a crisis that is putting the lives of vulnerable children at risk. Governor Holcomb and Statehouse Republicans responded to these critical issues by selecting a state insect. To working Hoosiers, Indiana Republicans’ absolute indifference to tackling stagnant wages and rising premiums looks alarmingly out of touch. After nearly a decade in complete control, Statehouse GOP legislative priorities have been quietly commandeered by special interests and the well-connected. So it’s another year without action and working Hoosiers are stuck treading water. Hoosier Democrats across the state will continue fighting to make positive change because we know Indiana can do better.”
